Course Introduction

This class deals mainly with the practical side of translation, while touching the theoretical side. Translation is a skill that requires a type of knowledge, which is often beyond the general English proficiency, namely, in-depth cultural knowledge. The level of the students' English knowledge is very uneven. While some students are nearly bilingual, others still struggle with the basics. As a teacher, I have to account for this somehow. All the students, the more advanced as well as the rather intermediate, should be able to improve their language facility. This is a delicate balance, not to bore one student while asking too much of another.
